Afriponics started in 2014 when we discovered an incredible method of growing a protein and vegetable together, originating in Africa, hence the name Afriponics.
From these narrow and naive beginnings, COVID-19 hit and our lives were irreversibly changed, in more ways than one.
We were asked by Bishop Paul Verryn to help the vulnerable people he was working with, to grow food. We agreed and nothing has been the same since.
With no experience in the NGO & NPO space, we dove immediately into training 230 young people across five regions; Soweto, Orange Farm, Diepsloot, Honeydew and Refilwe, all townships or informal settlements across Gauteng, South Africa.
Five years later, we've worked with many different organisations, traveled across all nine provinces, met 1000's of people, in both urban and rural landscapes, and seen first hand the desperation and resignation and despondency of people. Things are tough out-there.
It's from these meetings and talks, listening to the needs and frustrations that we formalized a program we thought meet some of these, and light the touchpaper of hope for them and their families.
